Frequently Asked HVAC Questions

Listed below are frequently asked questions related to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. By clicking on a question it will expand to display the answer below. Always feel free to contact the experts at Lane Service with any additional questions We would be glad to hear from you.

How often should I have routine maintenance done on my air conditioning system?

You should have maintenance done on your air conditioning system twice a year to ensure maximum efficiency.  This allows us to foresee any possible problems that may occur in the near future. Our monthly maintenance plan is specifically designed to keep your air conditioning system running at optimal efficiency year-round.

What maintenance should I do on my air conditioner?

The most important maintenance you can do to your air conditioning system is to change your filters regularly. Your air filters should be replaced every one to three months depending on usage. This is extremely important to the performance of your HVAC systems and your indoor air quality. Any additional maintenance should only be performed by qualified personnel.

How do I know if I need a new heater or air conditioner?

If your HVAC system requires constant repairs, if your system is 15 years or older, or can’t heat or cool your home properly, we recommend that you replace it. When an HVAC system ages, it doesn’t operate as efficiently and could actually end up costing you more money than it should.

Is there anything I should check prior to calling for service?

Yes. Check to be sure that the air handler or furnace is plugged in. Check that the breakers and the disconnects are turned on and be sure the thermostat is set correctly.

How is the efficiency of heating and cooling equipment measured?

The S.E.E.R. (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) is the amount of cooling your system will deliver per dollar spent on electricity. For example, a 3-ton unit may have a S.E.E.R. efficiency rating of 13, 14, or 15. The higher the S.E.E.R. the more efficient the system will be. The S.E.E.R. rating of any given unit can range anywhere from 13 to 17.

Is a system with more capacity better?

No. A larger system with more capacity delivers less comfort and costs more to operate. An air conditioner is at its least efficient when first turning on. A system with too much capacity will run in numerous short cycles, turning on and off repeatedly, therefore causing it to be less efficient. Also keep in mind that an air conditioner only removes humidity when it’s running, so a system with shorter run cycles doesn’t remove humidity from the air very well.

How can I increase the efficiency and life of my home’s heating and cooling systems?

Do I really need a furnace cleaning every year?

Yes! Not only does a furnace cleaning improve the performance and efficiency of your system, most manufacturer warranties require annual service to maintain the warranty.

How does a heat pump work?

A heat pump works by transferring heat energy from one source to another. In the winter when your heat pump is acting as a heating system, it extracts heat energy from the outside air (even in near-freezing temperatures) and transfers it into the air in your home. When summertime rolls around, it’s as easy as flipping a switch to change your heat pump to cool mode.

Why are heat pumps more efficient?

Heat pumps are one of the most energy efficient HVAC systems available on the market because they don’t burn fuel to provide heat. In addition to their high efficiency, they can operate as both a heating and cooling system, thus reducing the number of systems that require maintenance, repairs, and replacements.
